How to take your Hootone course correctly
Most disappointing outcomes we review are not treatment failures. They are half-finished courses, doses taken at random hours, or a repeat order that arrived three weeks late.
When our physicians review a course that did not deliver what the patient hoped for, the reason is usually visible in the first two questions. Was the full course completed, and were the doses taken at consistent times? More often than not, one of the two answers is no.
This page is the practical detail that the pack insert does not have room for.
1. Your dosage is on your pack, not on the internet#
Dosages differ between formulations, and between patients on the same formulation — weight, age, kidney and liver function and other medicines all change the recommendation. Follow the dosage printed on your pack and the one our physician gave you in writing. If those two disagree, stop and ask us before taking anything.
2. Timing matters more than most people expect#
- Take doses at roughly the same hours each day. Two fixed times a day, tied to existing habits such as breakfast and dinner, works better than an intention.
- Unless told otherwise, take capsules after food with a full glass of water. Food reduces stomach irritation and helps absorption of the fat-soluble constituents.
- Stay upright for a few minutes afterwards, and do not take a capsule lying down.
- Leave a gap of at least 2 hours between our formulation and other medicines, unless your doctor has said otherwise. This matters most for thyroid tablets, iron, calcium and antacids, all of which bind to other substances in the stomach.
- For topical preparations, apply to clean dry skin and wash your hands afterwards — particularly with anything used near the eyes or on broken skin.
3. Missed doses#
- Remembered within a few hours: take it, then return to your normal schedule.
- Close to the next dose: skip the missed one entirely.
- Never take two doses together to catch up.
- If you have missed several days, carry on from where you are and tell us — it changes how we read the end-of-course results, and pretending otherwise only misleads both of us.
4. Complete the stated course#
Every formulation has a minimum course length, printed on the pack and repeated in our physician's recommendation. Traditional formulations act gradually, and stopping at the point where you first feel better is the single commonest reason a course does not deliver. Plan and order the full course from the outset rather than pack by pack — international shipping takes five to ten working days and a gap in the middle of a course is worse than a delayed start.
Set a reminder to reorder when you have about ten days of capsules left. That one habit prevents most interruptions.
5. Storage#
- Cool, dry, out of direct sunlight. A bedroom cupboard, not a bathroom shelf or the top of the refrigerator.
- Keep capsules in the original blister or bottle. The packaging is part of the shelf life.
- Do not refrigerate unless the label says so — condensation each time the pack is opened does more harm than warmth.
- Check the expiry date on arrival and before starting each new pack.
- Out of reach of children, always.
6. What to monitor, and when#
A course without measurements is a course nobody can learn from. What to test depends on the condition, and our physician will confirm your list, but the usual pattern is:
| Condition | Baseline before starting | Repeat |
|---|---|---|
| Hepatitis B | HBV DNA, ALT/AST, HBeAg, full blood count | ALT at 4–6 weeks, HBV DNA at 3 months |
| HIV (alongside ART) | CD4, viral load, current regimen | As scheduled by your HIV clinic — do not change it |
| Herpes | Outbreak diary, type-specific IgG if not known | Diary reviewed at 8–12 weeks |
| Liver / fatty liver | Full liver panel, lipids, ultrasound | Liver panel at 8–12 weeks |
| Diabetes | HbA1c, fasting glucose, medication list | Glucose weekly at first, HbA1c at 3 months |
| Thyroid | TSH, free T4, current dose | TSH at 6–8 weeks |
Keep the reports. Photograph each one into a single album on your phone and send them through the patient area, where they sit against your case rather than scattered through a chat history.
7. What to report to us straight away#
- A rash, facial or throat swelling, or difficulty breathing — stop immediately and seek urgent care. This is rare, and it is not something to wait out.
- Persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or diarrhoea lasting more than two days.
- Yellow eyes or skin, dark urine, or unusual tiredness with loss of appetite.
- Any new prescribed medicine, including antibiotics and steroids.
- Pregnancy, or planning a pregnancy, and breastfeeding.
- Symptoms of low blood glucose if you are diabetic and taking insulin or a sulfonylurea.
8. Keep your own doctor in the loop#
Our formulations are used alongside conventional care, not instead of it. Tell the doctor who prescribes your antivirals, antiretrovirals, insulin or thyroid medication exactly what you are taking, and take the pack to your appointment so they can see the constituents. Two clinicians who know about each other can look after you properly; two who do not, cannot.
And to be unambiguous: never stop a prescribed antiviral, antiretroviral, insulin or thyroid medicine in order to take one of our courses. If anyone tells you to, they are not speaking for Hootone Remedies.
9. How to reach us#
Our medical team answers through WhatsApp and through the patient area, in English, Hindi, Arabic, French and Swahili. If you send a question with your reports attached, you will get a considered answer rather than a general one. There is no charge for follow-up during your course — asking early is always better than waiting for the end of the pack.
Questions patients ask
Should I take the capsules before or after food?
After food with a full glass of water, unless your pack or our physician says otherwise. Food reduces stomach irritation and helps absorption.
What if I miss a dose?
Take it if you remember within a few hours; skip it if the next dose is close. Never double up. If you have missed several days, continue from where you are and tell us, because it affects how your end-of-course results should be read.
Can I take this with my prescribed medicine?
Usually, maintain a time gap of at least 2 hours between other medicines, and keep both your own doctor and our physicians informed. Never stop prescribed antivirals, antiretrovirals, insulin or thyroid medication to make room for a herbal course.
How long before I notice a change?
It depends on the formulation and the condition. Traditional formulations act gradually and the stated minimum course exists for that reason. Lab markers such as ALT often move before you feel any difference, which is why baseline testing matters.
Can I stop early if I feel better?
Stopping at the first improvement is the commonest reason a course underdelivers. Complete the stated minimum course, and discuss any change with our physicians first.
How should I store the capsules?
Cool, dry, out of direct sunlight, in the original packaging, away from bathrooms and children. Do not refrigerate unless the label specifically says to.
